Biography

Mrs. Virginia Brás Gomes served for 14 years as a member of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, including as Vice-Chair, Rapporteur and Chair of the Committee. She also worked as a senior social policy adviser at the Ministry of Employment, Solidarity and Social Security of Portugal and was a member of the Portuguese National Human Rights Committee until 2021. 

She has extensive experience as a trainer on human rights and treaty body reporting in Africa, Asia and Europe, and has been a Distinguished Guest Lecturer in the LLM Programme in Intercultural Human Rights at St. Thomas University Law School since 2018.

Mrs. Virginia Brás Gomes is Vice-President of the Geneva Human Rights Hub and a member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Civil and Political Rights. She also works as an independent consultant in the field of human rights.
